Jack is a graduate of Virginia Tech where he was a member of the Corps of Cadets. He was a distinguished military graduate and served as a Captain with the 101st Airborne for three years, and yes, he jumped out of a perfectly good airplane. Serving in the military proved to be a good venue to develop leadership skills while serving his country. He received an MBA from Middle Tennessee State University and did additional graduate work in Industrial Organizational Psychology at the University of Tennessee. Jack is also a graduate of the Securities Industry Institute at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.
Jack began his business career working in the commercial banking industry in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He moved to North Carolina in 1981 and joined First Union Bank which was rapidly expanding in the Southeast. Jack was part of the commercial banking division and worked with organizations needing commercial and real estate financing. He later became Commercial Banking Manager for First Union in Winston-Salem covering parts of North Carolina and Virginia.
Following 15 years of commercial banking and serving in a number of leadership roles, Jack joined the regional office of Alex. Brown & Sons in Winston-Salem. His experience with corporations and nonprofits helps with developing an investment relationship with institutions. Jack was instrumental in developing the Institutional Consulting practice, which has grown significantly over the years. Over the course of Jack’s banking and investment career he has advised clients through a number of economic and business cycles. He has a broad understanding of the investment markets and can help guide clients looking for a tailored strategy to investment management, risk controls, capital markets exposure and philanthropy.
Jack is a senior member of an institutional consulting team based in the regional office of Alex. Brown in Winston-Salem. The team covers the Mid-Atlantic area and works with a wide range of organizations including foundations, endowments, family offices and individuals looking for a boutique firm that demonstrates thought leadership in handling investment programs. Alex. Brown is now a part of Raymond James, and the team takes great pride in the 200-year legacy of providing a high level of client care.
Jack is originally from Galax, Virginia and is married to his high school sweetheart, Phyllis. They have two adult sons, both living in North Carolina. Over the years, Jack has served in a wide range of civic organizations, and he is currently on the board of the Walker College of Business at Appalachian State. Jack is also an active member of Centenary United Methodist Church and in his spare time he likes to play golf, hunt and travel.
